Typical Buckingham Branch Job Descriptions

Conductor

Overview: A conductor works aboard the train. The conductor insures that the train is in compliance with all orders, signals, rules and regulations. The conductor inspects equipment on cars before departure to make sure everything is in good working order. He or she both receives and transmits information via radio and tablet to other conductors or stations. A railroad conductor is responsible for connecting cars and operating switches.

Requirements: Minimum of a High School Diploma/GED; 21 or older; ability to lift up to 100 pounds; ability to work outside in all weather conditions; ability to hang off side of moving car for extended periods of time; and clean driving record.

Lifestyle: Ability to work up to 12 hour shifts and have flexible work schedules; periods of time away from home; and travel occasionally to fulfill job requirements.

Engineer

Overview: Locomotive engineers operate trains. They must be able to thoroughly inspect the locomotive before and during operation, as well as check the speed, air pressure, battery and other various mechanics of the train while en route.

Requirements: Minimum of a High School Diploma/GED; 21 or older; ability to lift up to 100 pounds; ability to work outside in all weather conditions; ability to work up to 12 hour shifts and have flexible work schedules; and clean driving record.

Lifestyle: Ability to work up to 12 hour shifts and have flexible work schedules; periods of time away from home; and travel occasionally to fulfill job requirements.

Track Specialist

Overview: Track workers work as a member of a crew to install new railroad track, maintain existing track and right-of-way.

Requirements: Minimum of a High School Diploma/GED; 21 or older; ability to lift up to 100 pounds; ability to work outside in all weather conditions; ability to walk safely on uneven surfaces; ability to work up to 12 hour shifts and have flexible work schedules; knowledge of proper use of various hand tools and equipment; and clean driving record and ability to obtain CDL learners within 90 days of employment.

Lifestyle: Ability to be on-call during times of inclement weather; periods of time away from home; and possible travel to fulfill job requirements.

Mechanical

Overview: Mechanical specialists maintain and repair fleet, equipment, and locomotives.

Requirements: Minimum of a High School Diploma/GED; associate’s degree, diploma, or certificate in automotive engineering or any other related field of study is preferred; 21 or older; ability to lift up to 100 pounds; clean driving record; ability to detect malfunctions in diesel as well as gasoline powered vehicles and equipment; must have a solid understanding of hydraulics, pneumatics, electrical, and welding; and sound understanding of using all repair tools, equipment, and testing machinery.

Lifestyle: Make emergency repairs at all hours of the day; work up to 12 hour shifts; and flexible work schedule.
